Many of you might be wondering: what is “earthing?” Earthing, also referred to as “grounding,” is a simple technique used to transfer free electrons from the earth into the body in order to balance out the charge within our cells. This concept may seem farfetched to some people, but it has been around for as long as animals have walked the earth. By simply touching the ground with your bare feet, you are grounding. Many people who practice grounding/earthing on a daily basis have discovered its many health benefits.

The Science Behind Earthing:
The earth has a highly conductive surface and a plethora of negative electrons. We know this because earth is charged, having a magnetic field that influences how we navigate between the poles. Humans also have a charge that is influenced by our exposure to other charged objects. When we sit in front of a computer for example, we are exposed to radiation and free radicals that upset the electrical balance within our bodies.
Free radicals are essentially atoms or ions that are positively charged, missing an electron. Free radical damage results from these atoms/ions robbing another atom/ion of its electrons, and thus damaging cells. When cells are damaged within the body, there is a chance for the damaged DNA to mutate and reproduce, creating more mutated cells. This is how tumors and cancer can form.
When we introduce extra electrons into our bodies through the form of antioxidants or “earthing,” we are providing more electrons for free radicals to use, meaning that they are more likely to use these extra electrons rather than robbing our cells. That is where earthing comes in handy. By connecting ourselves with the ground, we are balancing out our positively charged atoms or ions with electrons from the negatively charged earth. Therefore, when we touch the ground or a conductive material connected to the ground with our bare skin, we are accomplishing this electron transfer.
Tools for Earthing:
Something as simple as tennis shoes have disconnected humans from earth’s electrical charge. In order to reestablish this connection, we can choose to walk barefoot, or we can utilize earthing tools to reconnect us to the earth and gain useful electrons. Grounding pads, mats (pictured), sheets, and even car seats are all tools that can be used to reconnect with the earth’s charge. These products can be bought online, or constructed at home.
