Mental diseases cause a person to act in an unusual behavior. The behavior or reaction or even action for that matter of an individual suffering from a mental disorder is pretty abnormal. A mental disorder is often termed as a psychiatric disorder or anomaly. The person’s thinking, reaction, etc defines the mental disorder that he or she suffers with. Usually the functioning of the brain or the nervous system stops or is defective which causes a number of mental diseases. According to a survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) , one third of the people in every country from some or the other sort of mental disease.
The causes of mental diseases are more than many. However, in some cases it may even be unclear. The reason may sometimes even be genetic. Environmental events, social events, etc may also lead to mental abnormalities. Thus, mental diseases or mental disorders can be defined as dysfuctioning of the brain.
When encountered with a mental disorder, it is advisable to consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist so that treatment can be done. Measures to control it should be taken as soon as possible. It is recommendable to get a medical diagnosis done as soon as the symptoms and causes are detected. The treatments are pretty expensive. Also there are various medical tests that are followed by the diagnosis which are extremely time – consuming and of course budget is sky- high.
There is a long list of categories of different mental diseases. Out of which some include fear, anxiety, sleep disorders, eating disorders, developmental disorders, factious disorders, body dysmorphic disorder and the list carries on.
List of common mental health disorders:
Anxiety or Fear: This may also be termed as anxiety disorder. Here, the patterns of belief, perception of reality can become disordered. For instance, delusions, hallucinations, etc. the person tends to develop certain phobias, panic disorder, and depression. Obsessive- compulsive disorder, a very common abnormality comes under this category of mental diseases.

Eating Disorder: Eating disorder is also a type of mental disease. It refers to disproportionate concern in matters of food and weight. Anorexia nervosa comes under this category.
Sleep Disorder: This largely includes insomnia i.e. a person’s sleep is disrupted.
Besides the above mentioned diseases and disorders, there is something called as impulse disorder (people who are not able to resist certain kinds of impulses or rather urges come under this category); sexual and gender identity disorder; kleptomania (stealing) and pyromania (fire- setting); psychosis; schizophrenia; personality disorder; premenstrual dysphoric disorder and body dysmorphic disorder.
The use of drugs, be it legal or illegal, use of alcohol, gambling, etc can all be considered as disorders.
For the cure of all these mental diseases, there are various prevention programmes held in different parts of the country and world as whole. The governments of different countries have also come up with some mental health strategies too.
